Happening in the World: Around 80 thousand hotel workers in the Canary Islands are taking part in strikes as part of an ongoing fight for better pay and working conditions. The strike was called by the Comisiones Obreras union, who cited the imposition of “minimum service” laws which restrict the rights of hotel service workers to strike as the primary reason for the action in a recent press release. The strike follows a series of protests over mass tourism in the Canary Islands last year. (BBC)

Happening in the US: Two people were killed and at least six injured by a gunman on Florida State University’s campus in Tallahassee yesterday. The shooting began around noon outside the student union. Tallahassee police apprehended the shooter, who is now in custody at the hospital, a short while later. Classes and athletic events at the University have been cancelled through Sunday. (AP)

Happening in NYC: Federal transportation officials announced yesterday that the Trump administration is taking control of the reconstruction of Penn Station, a project previously overseen by the MTA. The government plans to work with Amtrak and NJ Transit to combine the reconstruction and expansion of the station, two projects which the MTA had planned to carry out separately for years. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and other officials have stated that they believe the new federal involvement will save taxpayers over one billion dollars. (Gothamist)

Happening in Our Community: The Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender is presenting a conference in the Schermerhorn Extension titled “Feminisms in Motion: Approaches to Transit, Contagion, and Movement” from 10 am to 4 pm today. Five panels related to the titular theme featuring professors and experts in gender and sexuality studies will be held throughout the day. Registration is required.
