New third space unlocked

After an exciting first open meeting, we (a seasoned Bwogger and an aspiring new staffer) ventured down to 111th and Broadway to try Morningside Heights’ newest edition: Raising Canes. Canes has always been a road trip stop, a drunk meal, or a hangover cure, but today it was a cultural experience, an immersion if you will. Upon arrival, we were taken by the glowing sign, brightly lit interior, and disco balls hanging from the ceiling.

We walked up to the cashier, who very kindly took our order IRL (these days it feels like fast food restaurants lack a sense of human connection). We then took our seats in a booth that allowed us to take in all that Canes had to offer.

If you didn’t already know you were in Morningside Heights, stepping inside this Canes will remind you. The walls are adorned with Columbia flags, old photos of campus, New York sports memorabilia, and magazine covers featuring iconic New Yorkers. Although we were not impressed by the throngs of couples taking up every single table (and maintain that Canes on a Sunday night should be reserved for the girls and is not the place for date night), we’ll let it slide. Only because everything else was so good. All in all, the ambience was 100000/10.

(Quality got ruined but trust us this food was so beautiful. Our picture should be in The Louvre)

Of course we had to go with the classic box combo: chicken tenders, fries, Texas toast, coleslaw, and the famous Cane’s sauce (a MUST). We also got an unsweetened iced tea which was FIRE. The chicken was piping hot, crispy on the outside, and hot on the inside. The canes sauce was perfectly creamy, salty, and delicious (but they charged 60 cents for an extra, which was a little bit insane, #recessionindicator). The toast was buttery and soft like a cloud and honestly stole the show. We weren’t as impressed by the fries and agreed that the ideal meal would’ve had McDonald’s fries instead. We weren’t that hungry, so despite being really excited about the coleslaw, we were too full to give it a fair chance. But we will be back. Trust.

While the service was on par with a Michelin Star (the employees were literally wiping down the legs of chairs and greeting us while walking in; talk about A+ health standards), the crowd did not compare. Surrounded by couples and our opps, feigning for any sense of anonymity, we concur that everything is up for grabs at Canes!
