Oh how I yearn for your cool, sweet embrace.
Dear John Jay Dining hall,
As we returned to campus, Bwog was intrigued by your shiny new ice cream station. We 2Girls1Snacked it of course, as the ice cream has been a big hit among students.
Something else however caught my eye. And mouth. I’m vegan, but also super lactose intolerant. Sadly, this means the ice cream station is not for me. On rare occasion it has sorbet, but its just not the same. Whenever my friends go to get ice cream, I don’t feel left out, because John Jay always provides.
In my controversial article last year defending you, John Jay, as my dining hall of choice, I mentioned your new house made vegan desserts. These have been a big hit, even among my non-vegan friends. One of my friends loves the vegan carrot cake so much that she had to text Columbia Dining, and her quote is now on their Instagram. You have now gone above and beyond, as not only do you have these vegan desserts, but everyday you have vanilla oat milk soft serve. And serve it does.
Pay no attention to the fact that it is a sort of gray-ish color… The ice cream itself is smooth, creamy, and overall a quite pleasant experience. It is not too sweet, and there is a hint of vanilla. If I’m feeling crazy I will even top it with the overnight oats or chia seed pudding they have next to it. This lovely dessert has saved both my mind and body, and for that, I extend my infinite gratitude to you.
Even with all the Ferris-heads, the haters, and Big Dairy, you have shined through. I have never doubted you, John Jay, as each year you provide me with more and more. Even if others don’t understand our special bond, the daily presence of this new soft serve affirms it to me again and again.
Yours truly,
Maggie Aufmuth
