Your genes may be responsible for 55% of your lifespan, according to new research.

Happening off-Campus: A new study published in the journal Science says that your genes may play a greater role in your life expectancy than was previously thought. By “eliminating the outside noise” of external factors like accidents, homicides, environmental hazards, and infectious diseases, the study’s authors conclude that lifespan, determined solely by “intrinsic mortality” (deaths caused by internal factors like age-related diseases, genetic mutations, and general decline of health with age), may be up to 55% genetic. This figure is a significant jump from the previously estimated range of 6-33%. Nonetheless, members of the scientific community underscore the importance of diet and exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which, even with this new figure, are still responsible for 45% of your lifespan. Happening near Campus: Instacart has started charging customers in New York City a “regulatory response fee in answer to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection’s new minimum wage rule for grocery delivery workers. The rule, designed to reduce low pay and unpredictable earnings for workers, now requires grocery and food delivery app companies like Instacart to pay their workers at least $21.44 an hour, as well as present customers with the option to tip workers during checkout. In a statement this week, a spokesperson for Instacart said, “For months, we raised clear, data-backed concerns that the policy would increase grocery delivery costs for New Yorkers, but those warnings were repeatedly ignored.” (Gothamist)
