@No, if he had said “that’s why I transferred out of this school”, that would have been okay. But he chose to name-drop.
And, in response to the douche, going to Harvard does not guarantee that you will be more successful than a Columbia student, and I can’t believe you are pompous enough to believe that. Are you going to be more successful than Warren Buffet, FDR, and John Kluge? You sure? The truth is, a lot of Columbians could transfer into Harvard; you were competing against a very limited pool of applicants in transferring between Ivies. So get down from your high-horse.
@lay off this guy. If he had said “This shit is why I transferred to UIllinois,” you wouldn’t have said a goddamn thing. Or, more likely, you would have given him shit about how much lower ranked UIllinois is than Columbia. This is because everyone here is more interested in prestige and school rankings, rather than actually learning anything.

@But You really don’t have to be so rude about it. I mean, I do own a pipe, it started as a bit of irony and then now I enjoy it. Perfect way to end a hard day of intellectual effort. One I found difficult to find at Columbia. Sorry. I will do better in life than you will, and for that I understand your resentment. I was one of only six transfers admitted to Harvard when I applied. For this I will always be proud and my accomplishments will only soar from that moment.
You may rot at number ’11,’ while FAIR HARVARD will always be number 1.

p.s. I think this feature can increasingly be boiled down to barnard first year seminars and anthro classes. I see b&w took it upon itself to investigate the former…now it’s time to take a page from bernard cohn and be an anthropologist among the anthropologists, hmm? I want to know if they even have a review process for these classes or if faculty come up with them on a whim during conferences in, oh, amsterdam maybe…or jamaica.

I didn’t go to Harvard because I heard from everyone who went there that it was a place where you’re ignored as an undergrad even more than at most Ivy League schools. Fact remains that Columbia College is one of the smallest in the Ivy League and that I felt I’ve gotten a lot of attention here that I wouldn’t have gotten elsewhere. And you know what? There’s still plenty of time for me to go to Harvard for grad school, when they may actually acknowledge my existence.
So in summation: Harvard kid, fuck off.
