Improv Everywhere, the guerilla performance group that masterminds incredible public displays of silliness all over New York City, has teamed up with the (now suddenly hip) CUArts. The Mp3 Experiment Columbia University is the latest iteration of a well-established IE mission, and will definitely be the best orientation activity ever planned in the history of orientation—well the first week back at school, which can be very disorientating.
It will take place before the Activities Fair. Participants assemble, with props, at a given time and location (Ancel Plaza). They are in possession of instructions via an mp3 file which you must not listen to before the event, in order to preserve spontaneity. Synchronized by atomic clock, the participants hit play and follow the mystery instructions.
The magic will happen on September 9th, and will be followed by a live talk with Charlie Todd, the founder Improv Everywhere, later that afternoon. You can RSVP to the Experiment on facebook, and for the talk on CUArts. Being the savviest of campus publications, we already interviewed Todd in the March edition of The Blue & White.
Spoiler alert: David Pogue already did the experiment and wrote about it.

@Anonymous this actually sounds like one of the worst nsop events i’ve ever encountered
@CC13 This is shameful but which one is Ancel Plaza, again?
@Anonymous Near Law/SIPA/EC, right?
@Anonymous Isn’t the whole point of the mp3 experiment to get a giant group of people doing the same thing simultaneously amongst a general population of others who are not in on it? I don’t understand what advertising and performing one of these within the gates of Columbia–where everyone will know exactly what is happening–does for those involved or those watching. This is dumb.
@No, While it’s a definite kick to shock some passersby with a high five or something of the like, stunning the crowd is the idea behind some of their other improv events, like the grand central freeze, or their musicals, not the mp3 event. The idea behind this is just to have fun in a public space. You could even go as far as to argue that getting out and doing something goofy with a bunch of your peers encourages community. I can see how this would be a great nsop event.
My only concern is that it’s during the day BUT i bet a round of ‘Roar Lion Roar’ will be involved
@Anonymous yo bwog be cuttin on spec hard
@What's next? A pantsless tree lighting?
@FIRST FIRST! WOOP. seriously though, this is gonna be sick
