First Amy leaves, and now it appears that HamDel is undergoing unexplained cosmetic surgery. What will be next? Limited hours with a breathalyzer test at the door? A man can only handle so much change.

@Syed Amy the Hamdel Lady now works at the deli located on 106th and Amsterdam. Can’t recall the name, but I saw her there around 6pm. She probably got much better hours than the graveyard drunk shift.
@i dont know this man’s ethnicity. But since stepping foot on this campus in 2008 approximately 200 supposedly smart and politically conscious people have looked me up and down and said “Oh wow, you don’t LOOK Mexican” when they hear me speaking Spanish. While my answers ususally vary from “Well. I look like my parents and they are DEFINITELY Mexican” to and laughing uncomfortably, or going into a monologue about how Mexico is actually very diverse, I’m sick of it. And while I consent that light hearted ethnicity jokes can be funny, commeting to some one that they look or don’t look like their supposed ethnicity is offensive and makes you look like an ignoramous. I don’t know why I’m writing this, but hopefully someone who reads this will think twice about making such a stupid comment to someone. That, and maybe next time some one says this to me I will say “Really, because you look just like you’re from upstate New York.”
@Anonymous Well put. Thanks for bothering to write that.
@Anonymous Unfortunately, many people seem to forget that America was colonized by a great variety of European countries, and that in the centuries since then, many other Europeans have continued to immigrate here. There are eastern European communities in Argentina just as there are in the United States. There are families whose families trace back to Italy in only two or three generations in Uruguay just as in the United States. So it’s entirely possible to find someone from Mexico who doesn’t look “Mexican,” or from Argentina who doesn’t look “Argentinian.” (If you want a well-known example, take Gisele Bundchen, who is sixth generation Brazilian.) But if you’ve looked at any race and ethnicity surveys lately, being Hispanic is usually not associated with your race. (Though the options are generally Hispanic-white, and Hispanic-not white, which is another issue entirely.)
In conclusion, what a bummer that HamDel is closed.
@Anonymous All I want. Is a ham del cheese burger with extra ketchup and pickles. Literally. All I want.
@Anonymous Come on come on
I see no changes. Wake up in the morning and I ask myself,
“Is life worth living? Should I blast myself?”
I’m tired of bein’ poor and even worse I’m black.
My stomach hurts, so I’m lookin’ for a purse to snatch.
Cops give a damn about a negro? Pull the trigger, kill a nigga, he’s a hero.
Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares? One less hungry mouth on the welfare.
First ship ’em dope & let ’em deal the brothers.
Give ’em guns, step back, and watch ’em kill each other.
“It’s time to fight back”, that’s what Huey said.
2 shots in the dark now Huey’s dead.
I got love for my brother, but we can never go nowhere
unless we share with each other. We gotta start makin’ changes.
Learn to see me as a brother ‘stead of 2 distant strangers.
And that’s how it’s supposed to be.
How can the Devil take a brother if he’s close to me?
I’d love to go back to when we played as kids
but things changed, and that’s the way it is
@HamDel will always be HamDel as long as the “Let It Ride” remains the ultimate sandwich
@Anonymous These posts are offensive and uncalled for.
@Do you like fig newtons…..yeah I bet you love them.
@CC'13 fig newtons, sir, are a superior cookie.
@How do you figure? Is it because (oh no, dear Lord in heaven) they make reference to ethnicity? Is it because they cleverly use one culture’s naming conventions to reinvent a treasured and loved children’s character?
I could understand if there were some stereotypes being called into play here – something truly offensive, like “Oh, he’s a Mexican, and he’s got a broom, he knows his place lolololol”. But thank Prezbo, there’s no shit like that going down here.
I guess my real issue here is that if we seriously want to combat racism, I don’t see how -ignoring- race and ethnicity altogether will do anything. Though some might argue over the accuracy of the term “race”, it’s pretty damn clear that ethnicity exists in some degree – and that might not always be visible phenotypically, but it’d be silly to deny that there aren’t certain physical characteristics that predominate one ethnicity over another.
But instead of ignoring these differences, or treating any and all reference to them as anathema, why don’t we embrace it? Why don’t we celebrate it? I mean for Kesho’s sake, he’s being compared to HARRY FRICKIN’ POTTER. Bitches love Harry Potter!
I just don’t see what’s offensive at all about any of these comments – save possibly the (thankfully) sparse objections to what seems nothing more than playful discussion about a man and his broom.
@I will make the amendment that comments like “QUE ESTA PASANDO” & “they even have a piñata” may be offensive (though your mileage may vary) in that they make suppositions – that BECAUSE he is apparently Mexican, his confusion must be in Spanish, or that for the same reason, a piñata is the default party favor.
But hey, I may be missing something.
@CC'13 yeah, like the fact he’s not necessarily mexican? or, please, feel free to explain to me why he is “apparently mexican”, because OBVIOUSLY he couldn’t be from el salvador or guatemala or peru or honduras…
but hey, i must be missing something.
@CMON SON He’s definitely mexican. look at him!
@I said "apparently Mexican" because other comments (namely the piñata post) seemed to have been made on the basis of a Mexican appearance, not necessarily because I found there to be “evidence” of Mexican heritage beyond some vague physical likeness that – as you’ve pointed out – could very well be traits of other Hispanic ethnicities – or even a non-Hispanic ethnicity.
It was that kind of “logical” leap that I was labeling as offensive in that post – and I used the particular phrasing “may be offensive” because, while I don’t take personal offense to it, I can certainly see how others might.
Have I wronged you in some way?
@Pinatas actually originated from Chinese culture.
@Listen All I can say is this argument could have been avoided had not Bwog decided to take this photograph of what appears to be a hard-working man perplexed at the very innovation of Camera. His race/ethnicity would not have been in question. The real perpetrator of this crime is clearly Bwog. Is he Mexican? I don’t know! Is he a sensational, spicy Hispanic Quid-ditch player? I know not! What we can attribute to this man is the strong grip to the wooden rod, a fantastic mustache and the looks that kill.
@Anonymous You are mistaken. Harry is a nickname for Henry which in Spanish is Enrique, and one nickname for Enrique is Quique. Potter in Spanish, as in the trade, is alfarero, therefore, Harry Potter in Spanish is Quique Alfarero.
@naw Heraldo Pottierez is better
@So why is it funny to make a joke out of someone’s supposed ethnicity?
@Anonymous I dont know, it just is.
@That was a rhetorical question, you idiot.
@That man is too hot to HamDel!
@Quidditch anyone? The way he seems to be on the verge of mounting that broomstick leads me to believe he’s the Mexican Harry Potter.
@Anonymous Heraldo Pottierez
@Truth Favorite please?
@what no
where’s amy
@Anonymous ¡¿QUE ESTÁ PASANDO?!
@Anonymous what. a. great. facial expression.
@They even have a pinata in the background.
@Damn Straight That face is meme worthy.
@i used to make sandwiches then i took an arrow to the knee
