Remember last week when Ferris served a cake for dessert that made sexual assault awareness look pretty and delicious? Well, there’s some recent news on that debacle. Vicki Dunn, Executive Director of Columbia Dining, previously commented on the situation clarifying that the cake was an “inappropriate gesture” on behalf of an employee trying to recognize this month being Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Considering controversy with sexual assault at Columbia this past year, the cake was not taken well from students.
However, the cake was apparently not made by a Columbia employee in Columbia Dining. According to The Lion, Ferris workers did not make the cake and that the cake was made at a factory off campus. The Lion also reported from an employee saying that Dunn must have approved the order, but may not have known what was said on the cake. Looks like somebody is in some deep shit in Dining Services. What a damn mystery.

@Bet ya wanna put yer name on it cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake cake
@lol Okay the MORE I read about this the more I take Dining’s side.
It was a fucking cake. There are communities at Columbia that would kill to get that sort of recognition from the university. Appreciate the administration’s ham-fisted attempt at solidarity already.
@I really hope that no one at dining services gets fired or punished for this. Yes, it was inappropriate, but it was clearly coming from a place of good intentions. The dining staff were all given ‘denim day’ pins and told to wear them as part of Columbia’s PR mission on sexual assault, it’s not like there’s a mandatory ‘how to be PC at ivy’s’ training for them. I hope the school doesn’t take out their embarrassment and flawed cake-approval system on an employee trying to do something nice, even if it came off wrong.
@Jesus Christ What in the world is offensive about this cake?
PC police plz inform me
@It's Offensive Because Gothamist has a decent explanation of why it’s offensive, http://goo.gl/V0fCYO, but I’m not so sure I’d agree. It seems like a bit of an over reaction.
@Anonymous The text was red, duh http://bwog.com/2014/04/23/let-them-eat-cake/#comment-1568492
@Peaches It’s the idea that Columbia is trivializing this issue to show solidarity through the power of dessert.
@Anonymous “through the power of dessert.” Not sure if that’s supposed to be funny, but it’s fucking great haha.
@Anonymous Because Columbia has been the OPPOSITE of a good ally in addressing the problem of sexual violence on campus. It’s allowed repeat offenders to get away and denied survivors the resources they need. And to follow up this past semester with a cheap attempt to get brownie points via baked goods? While decorating the words “sexual violence” with flowers and frosting flourishes? No thx.
(Assuming you’re not a troll, though you probably are.)
@Anonymous You’re assuming that Columbia is a single, monolithic entity.
