38 CommentsSpec is reporting that an employee at Appletree supermarket tipped off police to a man he believes to be the suspect in the recent Journalism School student rape. We don’t know at this point if it was in fact the suspect himself [UPDATE: He’s not], but police responded to the tip and searched the area this morning.
UPDATE: Barnard students received the following e-mail at 5:45 PM:
“This is a further updated advisory concerning the sexual assault of the Columbia graduate student in her West 141st Street apartment.
We have just been notified by the Manhattan Special Victims Squad (MSVS) that their analysis of the Apple Tree surveillance tape confirms that the person spotted in the store early this morning who resembled the police sketch of the suspect IS NOT in fact the person being sought in connection with this crime. We will continue to keep you apprised of important developments as they occur.

@reply to lots a lot of you asked why to give him her pin? duh you idiots…if he uses the card, he gets caught on tape. when my moms purse was stolen we called the credit card companies. they don’t immediately cancel the cards, they put a fraud alert on them and monitor their use. a lot of places where you can use plastic to pay, or atms, have cameras. so they match up the times and HEY PRESTO have visual ID. yea, so the guy who stole my moms purse tried to buy 25 beef tenderloins at 1AM…which in and of itself seems so conspicuous. also, it is in the bank/cc company’s best interest to serve the customer, and any money spent in such circumstances is generally reimbursed
@spec wrote a second article when the results came from that email. They didn’t jump the gun, more like the cops did their job and spec followed.
@Mother Superior I would say they did jump the gun, seeing as they called him “the suspect” in their e-mail rather than “the man identified as the suspect” or just “the man.” Calling him the “suspect” is as much a leap to judgment as calling a suspect “the perpetrator” – which is why newspapers call suspects suspects before they are convicted.

If I suspect you stole my watch, you’re the suspect, even if you’re innocent. If someone else then sees someone who they think is you, that person may or may not be the suspect.
In this case, the man the Spectator referred to was not the same man who was suspected of rape; he was suspected to be the suspect, but “suspected suspect” does not equate to suspect.

@Anonymous surveillance video analysis had shown that it was in fact the suspect, i’m sure columbia students would have gotten an email immediately.

@simple speculation here, but barnard doesn’t receive emails sent out to columbia unless they are forwarded by the barnard administration. maybe columbia admins. have the responsibility to send it out? i agree though, columbia should get it, especially since columbia students can also live in plimpton.

@a point it seems before the fuckwad left he took her atm card and cash and made her tell him her pin number. just as an fyi, i realize that people may not even think of this in that kind of situation, but if you can think to give the guy the reverse pin, many atm’s will notify police when he tries to get cash. thats probably not true for the typical bodega atm i guess and god knows how many unnerving thoughts that woman must have been having but it cant hurt to put it out there

@There's a picture The police have released surveillance footage from a bodega where the attacker used the victim’s ATM card. So they know who that person is in the sense that they have his picture, but they don’t have a name yet.

@don't over react NYPD responds to all leads regardless and the suspect has been “spotted” at multiple locations at the same time.
