Earlier today, as reported by City Room, the board of the MTA voted to both raise fares and cut back on services. The widely-expected move comes amid a serious budget crunch, exacerbated because the MTA is required to have a balanced budget. Local officials claim that this was a necessary step, especially after the state senate blocked a package of new taxes and tolls championed by Governor David Paterson.
How will the decision affect you? For starters, subway and bus fares will increase from $2 to $2.50, beginning May 31. For your extra four bits you will receive fewer trains on the 1 line between 11 and 3 p.m. on weekdays, as well as between 2 and 5 a.m. all seven days, as well as a shortened M104 route. What a deal!
Other changes include the elimination of the W and Z lines, as well as 35 bus lines in total. A full list of changes affecting the 10027 zip code is posted after the jump, and those living elsewhere can search at the Comptroller’s website. Happy route hunting! (photo via Flickr)

@curious I still have not been able to get over the fact that during the Fall of ’05, when I was a freshman, I remember the MTA had a $50million surplus, and started doling out half-fare metrocards for a month. What on earth happened?? What changed between then and now that fucked their budgets? And if they were going to crash into a deficit, why the half-fares?
The MTA is stupid. What they really need to do is to lease out station space to businesses and let them sell their shit there and charge mad rent.
@Alum For one thing, tax revenues have fallen. There must also be fewer fare-paying commuters after the massive layoffs in the financial sector. Tourism and business travel are also down, thus reducing other sources of fare income. None of this could have been predicted in 2005.
@I think tourism is still quite high, though tourists and particularly businessmen from Wall Street are not necessarily the likeliest people to ride the subway in any case, especially not the latter. More to the point, however, have you personally seen a dearth of people on the subway? Do you have to go far and wide to find a subway car filled to capacity without any room for standing (assuming you still live in New York)?
@No... They did not manage their finances well. The state should have helped, but they should also not have been here to begin with.
@no but they seem to have had budget issues dating back to mid/late 06, when the economy was (under the illusion of) doing fine
@Don't Blame MTA It is very difficult to run mass transit like this without a deficit, especially on a system that is very old.
@Then who do you blame? They’re the ones that have failed to run it. Sure, their job is difficult, but its their job.
@blame... Can you think of a business in New York City that has as much of a monopoly, or that has as many customers and treats those customers any worse? Can you think of a business that has resisted upgrading its services as much– that is as filthy or as inefficient? And why a fare increase now, when energy prices have fallen by over 100% since the summer? I think it is very difficult not to conclude that they are simply incompetent.
