Bad news, friends: we now have one less thing to bitch about. By the end of 2012, your Columbia-provided email address will change over from Cubmail to Gmail. That’s right—no more of this.
According to Spec, to start, “50 to 80 students […] will be selected for the trial run by Shollenberger.” What we want to know is, to whom should our parents make the check out?

@Jane Nothing is free. There was an opinion piece in the Times two days ago called “Facebook is Using You,” which alluded to gmail’s mining of our emails for marketing purposes. Yuck. I don’t care if they read my Facebook page, but I really don’t want them using my email.
@sophomore It’s only going to make a difference if the the new Google-based Cubmail has a larger mailbox limit. Maybe 250MB was good in 1998, but nowadays you need at least a gig…

@... actually this isn’t going to be much different. columbia email accounts expire at graduation so if anyone actually cares about holding onto their email (and avoiding a whole host of other issues that come from maintaining two google accounts) they’ll ultimately end up forwarding columbia google apps gmail to personal gmail anyway. except that’s much more of a mouthful than “forwarding cubmail to gmail” (which apparently is beyond many students, despite clear directions) … mark my words: confusion and hilarity will ensue.
but hey, mom and dad can write those checks anyway because now we “have gmail”!

@Anonymous All Cubmail is is a front end for your standard IMAP mail account. All Columbia really had to do is change the front end.

@stickler Wow, way to be both wrong and an ass. There is nothing grammatically wrong with ending a sentenced with a proposition. At most it’s a preferrence thing and even that is just for people who want to seem smart by correcting people’s grammer.

@Anonymous I’m gonna get so much hate for this, but I honestly don’t mind Cubmail. Set it up with any mail client and you don’t have to look at its ugly webmail interface very often (if ever). That being said, Gmail will definitely be easier on the eyes.
Are there technical reasons that people hate Cubmail so much?
@this I mean, you forward from cubmail, and can send through your Gmail….I haven’t logged into Cubmail since freshman year. If anything this is an inconvenience because I will have to change settings.
@Anonymous Yes, but the thing is, when you say you forward it and don’t mind Cubmail as a result, it’s because you’re actually using your current mail service. You can’t say that that means you don’t mind Cubmail- you can only say that if you actually use the Cubmail client to check and send mail. Forwarding doesn’t count as using Cubmail- just as the switch to Gmail will not make much of a difference for those that already forward to Gmail.
