Mark Becker, of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, was reportedly killed in a serious multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday. Becker was an earth scientist with the LDEO and well-known environmental activist. An article from ABC describes the accident. According to another article, which further details the incident, Becker had been on his way to work at Bard College, where his “studies centered on using information technology to discern how human activities affect the environment.”
We extend our condolences to everyone affected by the passing of Mark Becker, and we ask for everyone to please remain respectful in the comments of this post.

@Prayers I wish the best to his family.
@Terri So very, very saddened to hear of Mark’s sudden death. A very, kind caring man who was so devoted to environmental preservation, and has saved so many wonderful acres in Bergen County with his partner Lori through their Bergen Swan . My deep condolences to Lori, may he rest in peace.
@Anonymous What a sweet, kind, wonderful man. Mark genuinely cared so much about his work and about his students. His GIS class was one of the best courses I’ve taken in my time at Columbia- we’ve genuinely lost one of the greats.
@Anonymous condolences to his family, rest in peace
@Onella It is MarK not MarC. The correct spelling of his name is on the LDEO link you (BWOG) embedded in the post as well as in the quoted text from ABC. So I don’t know how you’ll misspelled his name and you (BWOG) should fix it ASAP. It looks pretty insensitive.
@Courtney Couillard We have changed the spelling in both the title and body text. Thank you for bringing this to our attention as we did not intend to bring about any disrespect.
@get it right, if you care so much. It’s Bwog, not BWOG.
@Disappointed in the social ineptitude of our campus community. This is not the time for you Bwog trolls to be assholes, save that for the next sorority sombrero incident. Mark Becker was an exceptional human being and those that knew him or were impacted by his work are grieving today at the untimely loss of an inspiring man.
@Your reaction actually feels more insensitive and your anger rather misguided, Onella. :(
@Misguided? she probably was a student of his and she’s probably grieving. You may not like her reaction but this is a serious event. Let her react this way if she needs to.
@Madagascar Please correct the spelling of Professor Becker’s name in the title.
