5 CommentsThis morning, Dean Hinkson and President Spar sent an email to Barnard students informing them that Jessi Dietrich, BC ’16, had taken her own life. Jessi was a senior psychology major from Florida and vice president of the Pre-Vet Society.
Dean Hinkson and President Spar reminded students that there is “no right or wrong way to mourn.” The Furman Counseling Center (212-854-2092) and Dean of Studies office (212-854-2024) are available to help in-person or by phone, and students on campus can go to the Dean’s Office today from 4-6pm for a listening session.

Dear Barnard Students,
We are deeply saddened to share the news that Jessi Dietrich, a Barnard senior from Florida and a resident of 620, took her life early this morning. Members of the Dean’s Office were in contact with Jessi’s family throughout the night and are providing support and assistance during this most difficult time.
We know that this news is extraordinarily upsetting and hard to process. When we lose a member of our community, we are all affected by the loss. Jessi loved Barnard. She was a psychology major who did research in the department, and she had a strong interest in animals, serving as vice president for the Pre-Vet Society. And Jessi was also most certainly a friend to many of you.
Please know that there is no right or wrong way to mourn. If you need support or counseling do not hesitate to reach out. The staff members in the Furman Counseling Center (barnard.edu/counsel, 212-854-2092), and Dean of Studies office (barnard.edu/dos, 212-854-2024) are ready and waiting to help, either in person or by phone. We know that many of you are away this week, but for those on campus, feel free to stop by the Dean’s Office (105 Milbank) today from 4:00-6:00 pm. for a listening session.
We join with all members of the Barnard and Columbia community in mourning this tragic loss, and extend our deepest condolences to Jessi’s family and friends.

@Cc I really think that other schools at Columbia (especially undergraduate schools) should notify their students. Barnard and Columbia are technically independent, but it’s just silly and petty to ignore the way that our communities are interconnected. This is a loss for all of Morningside heights and I hope that everyone affected is able to get support.
@Actually I am a Columbia student and was notified as well.
@Anonymous Also, it usually takes a little bit before they notify all of the undergraduates, so please don’t assume. It has nothing to do with the Columbia-Barnard relationship. Thanks.
