Are you an enthusiastic Barnard first-year several months from becoming jaded about the many problems of your college? Are you a belligerent upperclassman trying to remember why you decided to come to this school in the first place? Are you a Columbia student who has never been entirely sure what Barnard is and has become, at this point, too afraid to ask? Or do you just really need an excuse to procrastinate on a hundred pages of reading? If you answered “maybe” to any of these questions, you should muster up some school spirit and head to Convocation, taking place at 4:30pm this afternoon in Riverside Church (located at Riverside Drive and 120th Street.)
Students are asked to gather outside the church between 3:45 and 4pm, so that they can line up with their Class Deans. At about 4:10pm, everyone will march into the church and be seated according to class. And if you got a free class T-shirt at the Barbecue last week, you should wear it (unless it’s already starting to smell, in which case you probably need to do laundry.)
Convocation is always both formal and exciting, as administrators and alumni share their thoughts on the year ahead. This year, the guest speaker will be Marcia Sells ’81, the Dean of Students at Harvard Law School. And after the ceremony, according to Dean Hinkson’s email last night, there will be a reception – we can only assume that means free food.
Dean Hinkson concluded her email, “I will be looking for you.” Is that a kind message to returning students or a dire warning of what will happen if you don’t show? Guess you’ll have to go to Convocation to find out.
