Music is so fun!

In order to help you fulfill your New Year’s resolution of spending less time in Butler, Bwog is reviewing the study spaces around campus so you know where to go and where to avoid. First up, we look at the library at the top of Dodge, the Gabe M. Wiener Music and Arts Library.

Amenities:

• Printers: 2 PawPrint-connected, 5-tray printers
• Scanners: 2 flatbed scanners
• Lighting: Bright flourescent tubes with a sterile feel
• Chairs: Lightly cushioned, metal-framed chairs with low backs
• Outlets: Outlets are available at 2/3 of table seating and about 1/2 of carrel seating.
• Computers: 7, 3 of which require log-in. Log-in computers come loaded with the full Adobe suite, Logic Pro X, AudiosScore Lite, and other music and audio applications.
• Bathrooms: One gender-neutral single stall bathroom with a great view and an openable window on floor 7. Additional bathrooms on floors 6 (female) and 5 (male). The lower bathrooms are serviceable.
• Water Fountains: One good water fountain on the 7th floor with a water bottle refiller.
• Food/Drink: Signs call it a red zone (no drinks allowed) but other signs say that you can use spillproof cups.
• Windows/View: Windows along three walls look out onto Broadway, north campus, and College Walk from a high vantage.
• Smoking: The area directly outside of Dodge is designated for smoking.
• Books: Music scores, music instruction, and music literature.
• Bonus: Audiovisual booths let you use CD’s, Laserdiscs, and vinyl records. Also contains a microform/microfiche room.

Atmosphere: Table and A/V seating feels very open due to the space between tables and the windows. The colorful magazines and book bindings help to brighten the place up. The study carrels are a bit better for getting down to business. To feel inspired, sit next to the bust of Bela Bartok.

Favorite Spot: In a far right corner, there are two overstuffed chairs with a view onto College Walk and its lit up trees.

Recommendation: The place is a welcome reprieve from Butler. However, it’s not a particularly “cool” library. Go here to change things up, to use the music software and hardware, and to change up your routine.
