New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art, but sometimes it’s difficult to break the Morningside-bubble and experience it all first-hand. “Where Art Thou” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/theatrically-inclined on campus.

Saturday, April 15th

  • CoLab Spring 2017 Showcase, 7:30 PM, Glicker-Milstein Theatre – “CoLab Performing Arts Collective is a student dance group focused on creating, developing, and workshopping multi-disciplinary projects. The group provides an outlet on campus to showcase process-based works that challenge current genre distinctions and promote creative collaboration amongst university peers. CoLab’s Spring Showcase will present nine new pieces created by students of the Barnard and Columbia community.” – Free and open to the public (RSVP here)

Wednesday, April 19th

  • Midday Music featuring Lydia Van Der Swaagh and Cindy Liu, 12:00 PM, Garden Room 2 at Faculty House – Lydia Van Der Swaagh and Cindy Liu will be performing a program featuring Sonata in G Major by Bach, Sonata in A Major by Franck, and Le grand tango by Piazzolla. – Free and open to the public
  • Creative Writing Lecture | Mitchell S. Jackson, 7:00 PM, Room 501 in Dodge Hall – “Mitchell S. Jackson’s debut novel, The Residue Years, was praised by publications including The New York Times, The Paris Review, and The Times of London. Jackson is the winner of a Whiting Award. His novel also won The Ernest J. Gaines Prize for Literary Excellence and was a finalist for the Center For Fiction’s Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize, the PEN/ Hemingway award for first fiction, and the Hurston / Wright Legacy Award. Jackson’s honors include fellowships from TED, the Lannan Foundation, the Bread Loaf Conference, and the Center For Fiction… He serves on the faculty of New York University.” – Free and open to the public

  • Senior Thesis Theatre Festival: Directing, various times on April 20th and April 22nd – Leo Angulo, Waverly Engelman, Talley Murphy, and Brittany Searles will present their senior theses in directing. – Free and open to the public

Friday, April 21st

  • Barnard/Columbia Dances at Miller Theatre, 7:30 PM, Miller Theatre – “This spring’s edition of Barnard/ Columbia Dances at Miller Theatre features three world premieres along with Mark Morris’ 1993 transcendent masterwork Grand Duo. Completing this rich and exciting program are new works by Antonia Franceschi, artistic director of her internationally acclaimed neo-classical company ‘AFD Just Dance’; Kevin Wynn, whose bold and empowered choreography has received numerous NEA grants; and Barnard faculty member, choreographer, and filmmaker Gabri Christa, whose transformative, dramatic works have garnered numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship for Choreography. The premieres are produced by the Barnard College department of dance and performed by Barnard and Columbia University students.” – Tickets $12 with CUID, additional show at 2 PM on Saturday
  • Ivo Dimchev: Concert and Book Presentation, 8:00 PM, Maison Francaise East Gallery in Buell Hall – “Please join the Maison Française at Columbia University for an exceptional solo piano-voice concert by Bulgarian performer Ivo Dimchev, who will perform a medley of songs from his past performances. This concert offers an excellent introduction to Ivo Dimchev’s fascinating personae and will be followed by an engaging discussion about his new book, Ivo Dimchev Stage Works 2002-2016.” – Free; RSVP here
  • Onyx Spring Showcase, 8:00 PM, Lerner Black Box Theatre – “This show will present four dance sets with a total of twenty-five dances performed by Onyx. The showcase will also feature performances from other student performance groups including Raw Elementz (hip hop), Sabor (latin dance), Sharp (a cappella), Nonsequitur (a capella), and Voltage (percussion band). The show will last roughly an hour and a half and will transform the Back Box into an exciting space that will have the audience transfixed and dancing in their seats..” – Tickets $5 with CUID; additional show at 8:00 PM on Saturday, April 22nd
