Canadians say no to drugs, Staten Islanders say no to deer, and more in today’s Bwoglines!

Happening in the World: Canopy Growth, the world’s largest cannabis company, is shutting down 3 million square feet’s worth of greenhouses in Canada where the company is based. Since the Canadian recreational cannabis market is moving slower than the company expected, they are also laying off 500 employees in addition to the closings for the sake of being cost-effective. (CNN)

Happening in the US: Nathaniel Woods was executed in Alabama on Thursday for his conviction as an accomplice in the killing of three police officers in 2004. Woods’s case caused national concern and up until his death, advocates fought to block the execution, arguing for Woods’s innocence. (NPR)

Happening in NYC: Staten Island is so unhappy with its wildlife population that they have invested $4 million in a deer vasectomy program they hope will reduce the overwhelming number of them (that isn’t actually that overwhelming if you have ever been anywhere in the rural northeast). Staten Islanders have mixed feelings about the policy but it is certainly working to reduce the deer population, which has dropped 15% in two years. (NYT)

Happening on Campus: Head to the Forum today at 3 pm for an address and Q&A with Ms. Sanna Marin, Prime Minister of the Republic of Finland. Moderated by Karenna Gore, Director of the Center for Earth Ethics, Ms. Marin will be discussing the implications of the “climate neutral welfare society.”

Poem: This week I insist you check out “Afrofuturism (Blanche says, “Meh”)” by Douglas Kearney! He is a genius of a poet and I highly recommend listening to him read this poem (and his others) because it probably doesn’t sound how you would expect. And if you are free on Saturday, he will actually be doing two readings at our very own Lenfest Center!
