Even though we’ve spread around the globe, Bwog thinks that we should still show some appreciation for life in New York! Here’s a short tour of our favorite sights at Columbia and in the city.

Famous Buildings

Ah, the New York skyline. What a beautiful sight! If you’re in a floor high up somewhere on campus and take a look south, you can see all the glorious odes to capitalist office culture looming like man-made mountains on the horizon. Who doesn’t miss this view? Here we see the city, calm after a snowfall but still ripe with life and opportunity to go forth and explore! The architecture in New York is second to none–skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building are Art Deco masterpieces, and there are countless other examples of great architecture sprinkled throughout the city.

The Statue of Liberty

You can’t think about New York without thinking about the Statue of Liberty. If you’re flying in to LaGuardia, you can see it from above if you’re lucky as you pass the city. What symbolism! What splendor! You’ve probably heard about the Statue of Liberty and studied its connection to immigration and Ellis Island in high school, or at least saw some crazy pictures about its construction. New York truly wouldn’t be New York without this stunning statue.

Central Park

A favorite of tourists, Central Park is found in the middle of Manhattan. The dichotomy of hulking skyscrapers in the distance and the expansive fields and nature in the park reminds us how peace can still be found in the midst of the bustle of the city. You can walk to Central Park from campus easily and it’s fun to go there to picnic on sunny days!

Butler Lawns and Futter Field

Finally, we come to Columbia’s campus. The lawns on a nice day are a favorite for students and people who live in the neighborhood alike. You can see all the people in that picture enjoying the weather and having fun! Whether you sit out there and do some homework or play Frisbee with your pals, it’s a great way to enjoy a warm day that doesn’t involve being overheated in your dorm without AC. Head over to Futter Field on Barnard’s campus to enjoy the sun on a slightly smaller and artsier scale!

The Met

Do you love being surrounded by a diverse selection of art and interesting items? The Met is a quick bus ride from campus and free with your student ID! Wander around among all of the Art People and tourists and look at cool paintings and suits of armor! If you’re feeling peckish, they have overpriced cafes, too, where you can grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee!

College Walk

What a staple of life at Columbia University in the City of New York: College Walk. If you don’t have a picture of yourself here in the wintertime, what are you doing? Admire the buildings of Columbia as you walk down this path; to the north, the distinguished Low Library, which isn’t a library, and to the south, the stinky Butler Library, which is a library. Do you feel the spirit of wintertime yet? The biting cold, but the golden lights on the trees warming your heart?
