Like it says on the package, so much tension.
Happening in the World: Rising tensions and violence in Nagorno-Karabakh, a heavily-controversial region in the Caucasus disputed by Armenia and Azerbaijan, have led the region to the brink of war. Governed by ethnic Armenians but under federal supervision by Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh has historically been a hotspot for violence in the region, a hold-over of Soviet-era border-drawing. Russia has recently offered to host peace talks, as the United States has generally removed itself from the discussion in the Caucasus. (BBC News)
Happening in the US: Twitter introduced new limits on political tweets, specifically in regards to claiming false results or attempting to spread misleading information. Politicians with more than 100,000 followers who make misleading statements on Twitter will have the said tweet labeled and users will not be able to engage with it. Twitter’s changes come on the heels of similar changes made by Facebook to curb misinformation prior to the election. (AP News)
Happening in NYC: Rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in New York have led Governor Cuomo to introduce new restrictions on gatherings this Thursday. Currently, many businesses are beginning to close once again, in addition to restrictions on places of worship and a number of schools closing. The new restrictions have been placed on hot spot zones, like Brooklyn, Queens, parts of Orange and Rockland counties, and parts of Binghamton. (NBC New York)
Happening in Our Community: One year after Columbia voted to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Columbia is hosting a seminar titled “Indigenous Peoples of the Americas and the Covid-19 Pandemic”, exploring how institutional failures have continued to create inequalities in Native American communities, especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
