Bwog knows how hard it can be to be far from your family during Lunar New Year. So we compiled a list of things you can do to celebrate the Year of the Ox from your Barnard/Columbia bubble!
- Learn how to cook your favorite traditional dish and prepare it for some of your friends.
- Do a fun red/golden inspired makeup look!
- Make dumplings. They count both as a craft and you get to eat something after!
- Buy red envelopes and write cute messages to your loved ones on campus (you can add money too if you have the resources for that).
- The Year of the Ox? What about the year of the AUX! Create a Spotify/Apple Music playlist full of traditional songs that make you feel more connected to your culture.
- Year of the Ox means time to eat some steak…? Close enough.
- The Ox is supposed to represent hard-work. Maybe you should do those readings you’ve been putting off…
- Call/Text/Zoom your family! We should all do this more often but alas, this is your chance to tell your family how much you miss them.
- Watch a movie from your country of origin! There are so many amazing foreign pieces made by Asian directors and with Asian actors.
- Manifest all your wishes for the new year and write them down!
- Walk through Chinatown and explore.
- Support one of the many local Asian restaurants by campus!
- Attend a virtual/safe in-person event from the many listed here.

@Anonymous Can’t believe last year I was celebrating Lunar New Year in Wuhan with all my friends and family. And now, I’m stuck in a dingy studio in the city visiting with my family over Zoom. Thanks a lot, America.
