The middle child of the 600s, 616 is located close to campus on 116th and Claremont, meaning that you shouldn’t overlook it if you’re into suite-style housing.

Location: 616 W 116th Street.

  • Nearby dorms: 600 W 116th Street, 620 W 116th Street, Claremont, Elliot, Woodbridge, Brooks, Sulz, Reid, Hewitt.
  • Nearby Restaurants: Morton Williams, Shake Shack, Prêt à Manger.
  • Cost: Last year, it was $5,052 per semester.

Amenities:

  • Bathrooms: Each suite has one private bathroom, and there are two bathrooms in the lobby.
  • AC/Heating: As of Fall 2021, there is AC and heating in each suite.
  • Kitchen: Suites have a kitchen with a fridge, a sink, and a stove. Bring your own microwave!
  • Lounge: There is a lounge and a computer lab on the first floor. Otherwise, with the exception of 5B and 6B, the kitchen will have to double as the common area.
  • Laundry: Laundry room in the basement with six washers and eight dryers.
  • Computers/Printing: Computer lab on the first floor has a printer!
  • Gym: No.
  • Intra-transportation: Two (small) elevators and a set of stairs.
  • Hardwood/Carpet: Linoleum.

Room Variety:

  • Five-person and six-person suites.
  • Six-person suites have two doubles and two singles. Five-person suites have three singles and a double.

Numbers:

Despite the quality location and suite-style living, it’s very possible for a group of all rising sophomores to get a suite here. In 2021, the cutoff for the six-person lottery was 100/60. If you’re a group of upperclassmen looking to live in 616, you’ll probably get your wish.

Bwog Recommendation:

There’s nothing to really complain about with 616, other than the fact that suites in other Barnard dorms are slightly nicer. If you live in 616 and go to visit your friend in 600 or CG, your first reaction might be envy about the size of their rooms and the comfort of their common areas. However, the availability of singles in 616, as well as its perfectly convenient location, makes it a totally viable choice for anyone who’s looking to do suite-style. And now it has AC, which is one less downside.

Resident Opinions:

  • “Location is amazing (proximity to Barnard and Columbia, and Riverside) and doubles are big, but beware of mice!”
  • “Great & convenient location, huge doubles, sort of lousy/grimy bathrooms and kitchens.”
  • “Totally acceptable.”
