New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art, and now that so much of it is online for free, there’s never been a better time to experience it first-hand. “Where Art Thou” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/theatrically-inclined.

Creative Writing

  • Columbia ISSG will be presenting Unworlding, a reading and discussion event with author N. K. Jemisin virtually on February 10 at 6 pm.
  • The Harriman Institute will be hosting a virtual book talk with Tinatin Japaridze about their new book Stalin’s Millenials: Nostalgia, Trauma, and Nationalism on February 10 at 12 pm.

Performances/Films

  • From February 10 to 15, the Columbia School of the Arts will be presenting an MFA acting thesis DANCE NATION with virtual performances throughout the run.
  • The Columbia Global Engagement Center will be hosting an interview/discussion event with the director of the animated documentary Flee, a film on the topic of Afghan migration, at the Columbia Global Centers on February 9 at 10 am.

Lectures

  • On February 6 at 1 pm, the American Folk Art Museum will be hosting virtual lecture with visual artists Valerie Cassel Oliver, Jennifer Jane Marshall, and Esther Adler.
  • The Schomburg Center will be hosting a virtual conversation about the photography of Zora J. Murff on February 7 at 6:30 pm.

Music/Audio Art

  • The department of Jazz Studies will be presenting a listening session of Such Sweet Thunder featuring Duke Ellington’s music combined with tone parallel Shakespeare connections. The event will be performed virtually on February 11 at 7 pm
  • Maison Française will be hosting a mid-day music concert in Buell Hall on February 11 at 1 pm featuring several solo performances from Music Performance students.
