Happening in the World: Yesterday in a historic purchase, Elon Musk struck a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion with plans to take it private. The world’s richest man, is taking over the social media site at $54.20 per share, a 38 percent premium over Twitter’s share price earlier this month before Elon Musk revealed he was the company’s largest single shareholder. The deal was unanimously approved by Twitter’s shareholder and is expected to close later this year. In his announcement of the deal, Musk cited the importance of free speech as “the bedrock of a functioning democracy” and his plans to unlock Twitter’s fullest potential. (NYT)
Happening in the US: On Monday, a Texas appeals court delayed the execution of Melissa Lucio amid increasing doubts as to whether she fatally beat her two year old daughter in 2007. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted the stay of execution so that a lower court can review material that could exonerate her of the crime. While prosecutors have maintained that the daughter was an abuse victim, Lucio’s lawyers argue that the daughter died due to injuries sustained from falling down a flight of stairs. Her lawyers have also said that her earlier confession was coerced and possibly invalid due to the relentless questioning she endured. (AP)

While inside the Archer Avenue/Parsons Boulevard subway station around 4:30 pm, the gunman engaged in a verbal dispute with the victim before fighting him and firing several rounds into his torso.
