The 2022 midterms come to a close as Republicans take control of the House. Editor’s note: mention of death.
Happening in the World: Recent Russian strikes against Ukraine target gas plants and factories, including an industrial facility in Dnipro and industrial centers in at least four other cities. Local air defenses worked to strike down missiles, but unfortunately, several people were injured and killed. There is some debate about the motivation behind these strikes, but Ukrainians are on high alert for more attacks. The damage to power structures is made worse by recent mass power outages in Kyiv. Happening in the US: Republicans have narrowly maintained control of the House of Representatives. They secured the 218th seat over a week after Election Day. As it stands now, this may be their narrowest majority since 2001, when they held a nine-seat majority over Democrats. Although this win may provide some leverage for the Republican Party, the narrow margin may complicate things. Some worry that the nearly even divide in Congress will lead to chaos. (AP)
Happening in NYC: In recent months, security companies have been drilling electronic trackers into trees throughout the city as a way to keep track of guards on patrol. Guards, often those looking after private property, would intermittently use their phones to scan the trackers, providing real-time updates on their location. Red flags have been raised about tree health and legality; The trackers violate city law. However, private companies continue to plant them, and they most likely won’t receive violation notices.
