Happening in the World: Chris Dawson, an Australian man who came to attention through the Teacher’s Pet crime podcast, has been jailed for 24 years for the murder of his wife Lynette Dawson in 1982. A judge ruled that Dawson killed his wife in order to continue his relationship with his teenage lover, who was also a student at the school where he taught and whom he wanted as a “replacement” for his wife. It was also said that he became increasingly desperate once previous plans to leave his marriage failed, and his lover had wanted to end their relationship. At the same time, Dawson has denied any involvement in his wife’s disappearance, stating that she possibly abandoned him and their two children to join a religious group. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Kanye West was suspended from Twitter yesterday, after the rapper tweeted an image of a swastika inside the Star of David. Elon Musk said that the post violated rules against the incitement of violence, and West’s account was soon replaced with a label that read “Account suspended.” This suspension occurred on the same day that West appeared in a podcast hosted by the conspiracy broadcaster Alex Jones, during which he noted, “I like Hitler.” Twitter had already restricted the account used by West since October, after he posted a string of antisemitic tweets, which have since been removed. Happening in NYC: The lack of public restrooms in New York City had been combatted through the setting up of port-a-potties at the pedestrian entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. However, the “entre-peeneurs” of this service offered by Uncle John: Portable Restroom & Services then began to offer their facilities for a donation of $1. While tourists have hailed these public restrooms as ideal and convenient, the city’s parks department has since shut down the “port-a-party” because they were unpermitted. A Rutgers professor estimated that 30,000 pedestrians crossed the bridge every day in 2018, but that there were only a few public restrooms at the entrance. (Gothamist)
