Happening in the World: The trial of former Hells Angels in Europe leader Frank Hanebuth will begin today in Madrid. Hanebuth and 49 other alleged international collaborators have been accused of running organized crime through the motorcycle club on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Prosecutors are seeking charges of membership in a criminal organization, money laundering, and illegal possession of firearms. (AP)
Happening in the US: After identifying the suspect in Sunday’s deadly shooting in Monterey Park, California, officials are still working to identify a motive. Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lo has stated that the suspect may have had a history of attending the dance hall where the shooting occurred, and “some personal relationships” may have been a possible motive. Happening in NYC: Five deaf Venezuelan migrants are set to lose access to their in-person sign language interpreters as the City Health and Hospitals system moves to virtual sign language interpreting services. Without direct access to in-person interpreters, the migrants, some of whom are asylum seekers, anticipate facing impossible hurdles in the immigration application process as well as securing jobs. Happening in Our Community: The Society of Fellows and the Heyman Center for the Humanities is hosting, “Moses Hadas and Historical Black Colleges and Universities – Classics, Racism, Segregation” tonight in Casa Hispanica Room 201 from 6:10 to 8 pm. The event will be a discussion led by Rachel Hadas, poet, translator, educator, and essayist on her father, Jay Professor of Greek at Columbia Moses Hadas, and his telelecture series in the summer of 1963.
