An inside scoop on the elusive dingle (double-single).

As a first-year Barnard student, I was ecstatic to find out what my room assignment was. When I looked at the floor plan, a strange room looked back at me. As I tried to understand what this being was, I searched and scoured the internet for a clue of what it might be. Pieces of information were given, but alas, no perfect image of what my future living space would be, not even on the Barnard website. I soon learned that my new room is called a dingle. What a wonderful way to describe such a lovely room. A dingle, or walk-through double, is two rooms connected by a doorway, or at least this is how I like to describe it to my classmates who question this peculiar, remarkable room. So to all the future first-years who are being thrown into the same position I was in, here’s my in-depth RoomHop of my Brooks dingle.

My side of the dingle is long and skinny, compared to my roommate’s whose dingle is much wider. I have a full closet (THAT’S ATTACHED TO THE WALL!!!) and under-the-bed drawers––that in my opinion are bigger than the drawers in Sulz––to add to that space. Don’t ask me why my drawers won’t close, even with this much space.

I only have a tiny space between my desk and my bed, and usually, when it gets messy, I have to vault around to avoid stepping on my clothes.

Here is my Barnard Dad tapestry that everyone who comes into my room signs.

Now let’s take a look at the other side of my dingle.

Look, a fireplace! Hanging on it is our little collection of dried flowers. So cottagecore! So coquette!

Yes. My roommate did push her bed against the window and now her bed is kind of in her closet.

But wait…SHE HAS TWO CLOSETS. TWO MASSIVE CLOSETS. IN ADDITION TO HER UNDER-THE-BED DRAWERS.

Am I jealous of her dingle? Yes. Mine is not that big and I’m slightly insecure. But, all dingles are beautiful in all shapes and sizes. Remember to love your dingle, to cherish your dingle, because this is the only dingle you have.
