Amidst everything in the world, how about listening to some poetry? Editors note: mentions of death

Happening in the World: A rare hybrid solar eclipse passed over parts of Australia and Indonesia on Thursday, impressing a large international crowd who had camped out in the remote Australian town of Exmouth to see the event. Celestial events like this are rare, occurring about once a decade. The last one was in 2013 and the next will not be until 2031. (NPR)

Happening in the US: The House is expected to pass legislation today to block transgender women and girls from competing in female school athletics. The bill, presented by Rep. Greg Steube of Florida, would ratify Title IX to withhold federal funds from schools that allow students “whose sex is male”—based solely on “reproductive biology and genetics at birth”—to compete on designated female sports teams. Happening in NYC: Legislation currently pending in Albany would create a task force to investigate the disproportionately high number of missing women and girls of color in New York state. The legislation would put in place preventative policies and address the “lack of care and concern” for BIPOC girls. Black lawmakers from New York City have been among those leading the fight.
