THE DOG PARADE IS HAPPENING.
Happening in the World: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have reaffirmed ties between Russia and Hungary amid tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine. Orban and Putin met at a forum in Beijing this morning. Hungary gets most of its gas and crude oil from Russia, and has opposed EU initiatives in support of Ukraine. Hungary is Russia’s closest ally in the EU. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: Rep. Jim Jordan is the GOP’s pick for House speaker, but there are a few GOP holdouts that view Jordan as too extreme as Jordan is an ally of former President Donald Trump. The House will begin voting for speaker at noon today. Jordan has been able to flip several holdouts over the past few days due to lack of options following the removal of Kevin McCarthy as speaker. Happening in NYC: Not even the rain will stop the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. Exorbitant fees for permits almost halted the event, and now the forecast for this weekend is rainy (surprisingly). However, organizers have announced that the parade will go on in any weather, and will utilize rain gear and ponchos. The parade will feature dogs and their humans walking down Avenue B and 7th Street at 1 pm on Saturday. (Gothamist)
Happening in Our Community: The School of International and Public Affairs will host a lecture with Klavdia Smola at 12 pm today about culture and literature in pre-Soviet Indigenous groups. Registration is required.
