Read about French protests, Donald Trump’s sentencing, and a mural in danger of being dismantled in today’s Bwoglines!
Happening in the World: More than 100 protests are expected to take place in France today in response to the nomination of Michel Barnier as the new French prime minister. The protests, primarily being organized by trade unions and left-wing political parties, will take place in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and other cities. Michel Barnier, a right-wing former Brexit negotiator, was picked for the role over left-wing candidate Lucie Castets by French President Emmanuel Macron last week. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Donald Trump’s sentencing for falsifying business records has been delayed from September 18 to November 26. Judge Juan Merchan referenced the upcoming presidential election as a major reason for the delay in his decision, stating that “[the jury’s] verdict must be respected and addressed in a manner that is not diluted by the enormity of the upcoming presidential election.” The sentencing was originally scheduled to take place last July, but it was delayed in response to the US Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling. Happening in NYC: A mural honoring significant figures in medicine is in danger of being dismantled. The building in which the mural has hung for the past 60 years—Pfizer’s original New York City headquarters—is being gutted and converted into housing. With a move-out deadline of September 10, art conservationists and relatives of the artist are trying to find a new home for the mural before it’s destroyed. (AP)
