Happening in the World: Parents raced to pick up their children from school in Beirut on Monday, amid fears that Israel may soon strike the Lebanese capital city. Israel has called for residents to evacuate after announcing that it was intensifying strikes against the Lebanese Militia Hezbollah. (NY Times).
Happening in the US: On Monday, the Biden administration announced an initiative to ban Chinese-developed software from internet-connected US cars on national security grounds. Following the same logic as banning Huawei telecommunications equipment, the action is intended to prevent Chinese intelligence agencies from monitoring the movement of Americans or using the vehicles as a pathway into the electric grid. Happening in NYC: The NYPD tickets hundreds of people a year for jaywalking, a majority of them being people of color. The City Council was slated to decriminalize jaywalking earlier this month but was abruptly pulled after advocates raised concerns over language that could provide legal cover for drivers who hit pedestrians. The law can’t come soon enough for New Yorkers who have been subject to the jaywalking fine, sometimes up to $250. (The Gothamist).
