Happening in the World: Over the weekend, Venezuela’s opposition candidate, Edmundo González, fled the country to Spain, shrinking the chances of him taking office from the country’s authoritarian government led by President Nicolás Maduro. Since the election on July 28, it appears that Mr. Maduro has set his place as president, despite the lack of recognition from Venezuelans and government officials across the globe. In a recording released on Sunday by the opposition, Mr. González states that his leaving Caracas was “surrounded by episodes of pressure, coercion and threats of not allowing [his] departure. [He] trusts that soon [they] will continue the struggle to achieve freedom and the recovery of democracy in Venezuela.” At the start of the election, Mr. Gonzalez was selected as the stand-in for María Corina Machado, a popular opposition candidate, who was barred by the country’s top court from the presidential ballot earlier in the year. Ms. Machado possessed a strong following and won a primary election in 2023, however the government viewed her as a risk to their socialist system and, therefore, disqualified her. According to the polls and other contributing data, analysts expected Mr. González to win the race, however, Mr. Maduro took the position without exhibiting proof of receiving higher votes. Since then the opposition has continued to publish evidence of Maduro’s loss in hopes of pushing him out. (NYT)

Happening in the US: The Dallas Cowboys have come to an agreement on their $240 million contract with current quarterback Dak Prescott. With $231 million in initial earnings and an $80 million signing bonus, Prescott is set to be the highest-paid player in NFL history, bypassing Deshaun Watson’s contract with the Cleveland Browns in 2022 by $1 million. His annual salary is also breaking records. Prior to his offer, the highest annual salary was $55 million, earned by Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence. Prescott’s guaranteed salary is set at $60 million, $5 million more than his predecessors. (BBC)

Happening in NYC: Early Sunday morning, three DJ’s, aged 23 to 24, were shot in a Queen’s neighborhood, leaving one dead and two injured. The DJ’s were loading their equipment into a van on a residential street around 1 am when a gunman appeared in a black hoodie and proceeded to fire several rounds at them. While the motive is unclear, the shooting transpired in one of the few precincts to have experienced an increase in gun violence this past year, despite a decline taking place city-wide. (Gothamist)
