Happening in the World: A missing woman was found in Australia’s Snowy Mountains after six days in a dazed and injured state. Lovisa Sjoberg, 48, was located Sunday afternoon with a snake bite, dehydrated, and a rolled ankle. She was treated for the bite on the scene and was, shortly after, rushed to the hospital, where she remains in stable condition. Sjoberg is a regular visitor to the Kosciuszko National Park, where she documents the local wild horses. She was found by a National Parks and Wildlife Service officer on the Nungar Creek Trail at Kiandra and informed the media that she had been wandering for days through tough bushland and was bitten by a copperhead snake two days into her disappearance. Happening in the US: In Western North Carolina, the devastating aftermath of Helene threatens health care access, leaving dozens of volunteer doctors, nurses, and psychologists to travel to the region to treat those unable to make it to healthcare facilities. According to Kody H. Kinsley, the North Carolina secretary of health and human services, “The health care infrastructure in Western North Carolina is already so fragile,” and the hurricane has helped shine a light on this. Several hospitals in the state as well as Tennessee are still closed, while others in Western North Carolina are having to rely on bottled water or mobile water units. (NYT)
