Timothee Chalamet’s surprise appearance at Washington Square Park!

Happening in the World: India’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), announced plans to fine and imprison those found guilty of contaminating food with spit, urine, and dirt, following some viral videos on social media. These unverified videos showed vendors spitting on food or mixing urine into food, which became the subject of now-debunked anti-Muslim rhetoric. Critics of these severe fines are worried that they will be used to target religious minorities unfairly. In Uttar Pradesh, the Chief Minister is planning on bringing two ordinances that will penalize spitting in food with imprisonment up to 10 years. (BBC)

Happening in the US: Former President Donald J. Trump’s closing rally at Madison Square Garden on the second to last Sunday before the election very quickly descended into an event full of racial discrimination and misogyny. A comedian kicked off the event by calling Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage,” and then followed up with various racial and ethnic stereotypes against Jews, Palestinians, and Black people. Misogynistic rhetoric surrounded the discussion of Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, in his 78-minute long speech, echoed the same insensitive sentiments following his speakers. (BBC)

Happening in NYC: Timothee Chalamet stunned fans after making a surprise appearance at the lookalike contest scheduled for Sunday in Washington Square Park. The contest, organized by YouTuber Anthony Po, promised a large trophy and a 50-dollar prize for the best lookalike. Miles Mitchell from Staten Island was eventually crowned winner dressed in a Willy Wonka outfit, where he tossed candy into the crowd. The event was partially shut down by police, who responded to an “unscheduled demonstration at Washington Square Park. (BBC)
