Happening in the World: Candle-lit vigils and rallies are held across South Korea after the president’s surprise declaration of martial law the night before called for his resignation. Hundreds of people gathered on the steps outside the National Assembly Hall in the capital. Opposition parties attempted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, whose six hours of martial law plunged Asia’s fourth-largest economy into political uncertainty. (CNN)

Happening in the US: Democrats flip one final seat in California, narrowing the Republican majority in the House. Democrat Adam Gray defeated GOP Rep. John Duarte in a rematch in California’s 13th District in the Central Valley. Republicans won 220 House seats this election, flipping eight Democratic-held seats. Democrats won 215, flipping nine Republican-held seats. (NBC

Happening in NYC: December astronomy forecast calls for ‘beast of meteor showers.’ The Geminids meteors, traveling more than 78,000 mph, peak on December 13 to 14 with up to 120 colorful shooting stars per hour. “The Geminids are the star of the show for December,” said Kat Troche, a NASA solar system ambassador. “All you have to do is kick back, relax, take your time, and you’re gonna look toward the constellation Gemini.” (Gothamist)
