Frantically checking my email for a mailroom notification.
Here’s my conundrum: My big, beautiful puffer coat does not arrive for several days, and the weather on campus is… cold. Because of my lack of adequate clothing I’ve had to get creative. Here are some ways I’ve been staying warm on Barnumbia’s frigid campus.
Layering
Although it may be the most obvious solution, layering is famously effective. My go-to layering combination has been a long sleeve, sweater, corduroy jacket, gloves, scarf, and leggings under jeans (a lifesaver!) Don’t forget the fuzzy socks and chunky boots.
Comically large scarf
Self explanatory. I highly recommend this Uniqlo scarf, which is the size of my entire body.
A million billion jumping jacks
That’s right, the middle school gym exercise you love to hate—or just love—is so back. Not only will you become incredibly fit from doing so much physical activity, but you will finally achieve warmth! Ignore the potential health risks that might come up.
Run up the Milbank stairs
Although it’s less whimsical, running up the Milbank stairs is sure to keep you warm and also make you on time for a change. Plus it’s a great calf workout!
Sit on your radiator
Am I doing this right now? You will never know.
Cry
And hope your tears are warmer than your frostbitten face.
That’s all the weather-related genius I can muster today. Let’s all pray for the speedy arrival of my coat. Stay warm!

@Anonymous thrift store at the church at 97th & Amsterdam… got a coat for like eight dollars there last year and it hasn’t let me down… might be a good interim measure…
