Mining, Ecologies, Gender

- This roundtable discussion will bridge gaps between mining traditions across space and time, featuring a panel of activists and experts. Each will enlighten how indigenous and local mining traditions challenge current notions of sustainability, with a focus on exploring gendered labor roles. As with many events from the Center for Science and Society, this talk will highlight the importance of understanding humanities and natural sciences in conversation with each other. Sam Nester – Resonating Worlds: Art, Science, and the Soundscapes of Discovery
- Thursday, January 30, 4:30 to 6 pm.
- In person at the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute, 19 Washington Square North. Registration required.
- Through this talk, Sam Nester will explore how sci-art collaborations introduce new interdisciplinary research and perspectives on collaboration. Fascinatingly, viewers will see his Plastic Record project, which captures coral reef soundscapes during the climate crisis by playing recorded soundscapes from the reef on disks made from ocean plastic. A Fireside Chat with Anthony Fauci
- Thursday, January 30, 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
- Online via Zoom. Registration required.
- Columbia’s Bioethics program will host Dr. Anthony Fauci for an interactive online fireside chat, where he will investigate our nation’s historical, current, and future responses to public health crises. This includes the AIDS crisis where he directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to the COVID-19 pandemic that brought Dr. Fauci to national fame. Data Science for Public Health Summit
- Friday, January 31, 8 am to 6 pm.
- In person at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Registration required.
- On Friday the School of Public Health will host a full day summit exploring public health in the 21st century. Events include the keynote address, “Statistical opportunities to improve healthcare: analytic infrastructure, Bayesian hierarchical models, and major challenges,”, as well as talks regarding pandemic preparedness, climate and health, and Language Learning Models as they relate to public health.
