Is Theatre Dying?

  • Monday, February 3, 6 to 8 pm, Sulzberger Parlor, Barnard Hall
  • This event brings director Wang Chong, the founder of Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental, a Beijing-based performance group, and the most internationally commissioned Chinese theater director, to campus. He will give a talk on the contemporary state of theater followed by a discussion with Assistant Professor of Theatre Yizhou Huang.

Maati Katha (Earth Stories)

  • Wednesday, February 5, 6 to 8 pm (plus reception), Glicker Milstein Theatre, Barnard
  • This performance by Choiti Ghosh, Abhisar Bose, and Mohammad Shameem is the result of an ethnographic research project around the doll-making practices of West Bengal, India. These dolls are the basis of folklore, oral tradition, and contemporary practice. Ghosh and her collaborators hope to expand the doll arts into new contexts by bringing them in conversation with material theatre practices, the folk-performance tradition of Bonbib Jatrapala, and musical traditions from the region. The performance “invites us to celebrate human resilience in the midst of fragility – a resilience that enables diverse communities to hold together through repeated upheavals of natural calamity and human violence.” Registration is required here.

Composer Portraits: Lisa Streich

  • Thursday, February 6, 7:30 pm, Miller Theatre
  • Miller Theatre’s latest composer portrait features Lisa Streich. Streich is currently composer-in-residence at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival. Her music features “stark contrasts, shimmering resonance, and motorized instruments.” This concert will feature three works, including the US premiere of a work, “Orchestra of Black Butterflies,” commissioned by Miller as well as the Venice Biennale. Tickets are required.

Billy Childs Quartet

  • Saturday, February 8, 7:30 pm, Miller Theatre
  • Billy Childs is an eight-time Grammy winner who is a pianist and composer. He has worked across genres, from collaborating with jazz musicians like JJ Johnson and Dave Holland, to working with classical and contemporary musicians Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, and the Kronos Quartet. In this concert, he will perform with his quartet, Sean Jones, Matt Penman, and Ari Hoenig. Tickets are required.
