Tariffs, nurses, and feminism.
Happening off-Campus: The Supreme Court of the United States struck down President Trump’s tariffs in a surprising 6-3 decision on Friday, February 20. The Court wrote in a majority opinion written by Chief Justice Roberts that the 1974 Trade Act which Trump claimed gave him the power to impose sweeping tariffs on other countries did not in fact authorize him to do so. Trump met the decision with defiance, and has since moved to impose a 10% tariff under another section of the 1974 law. (New York Times)
Happening near Campus: After over a month of strike, NewYork-Presbyterian nurses on strike reached a tentative deal with hospital administration on Friday, February 20. The more than 4,000 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian were the last in a historic strike of over 10,000 nurses in New York City. The tentative resolution includes a 12% raise over a three year period and a commitment to improve staffing and workplace safety. (Gothamist)
