Hop on a viral food trend with just a Sprite from JJ’s and a freezer!

This thing has been all over my Instagram for a while. Maybe it’s just my South Korean algorithm working overtime, but I’ve been obsessed with videos of people making Kohakuto—a Japanese crystal jelly known for its uniquely crisp, pleasantly crunchy texture—using very simple ingredients. This is the perfect low-budget dorm experiment to hop on a viral food trend if you’re craving a new taste.

Ingredients:

  • Any gummies you want to turn into Kohakuto (I recommend firm, sturdy gummy bears like Haribo)
  • 1-2 cans of Sprite (depending on how many gummies you’re using)
  • A freezer

Directions:

  1. Put all the gummy bears into a bowl.
  2. Pour Sprite over them until they are completely submerged.
  3. Let the gummies soak in the Sprite for 24 hours.
  4. Take out the swollen gummies and place them neatly on a flat plate lined with parchment paper or foil.
  5. If you have sugar, sprinkle a pinch over the gummies for extra sparkle.
  6. Freeze them for 24+ hours until the surface hardens.

I tried this in my dorm freezer and…half-failed. Apparently, the freezer wasn’t cold enough to fully set them. Make sure your freezer is actually cold enough to freeze them solid.

If it works, you’ll get crystalized gummy bears with a crisp shell and a melt-in-your-mouth center. Enjoy your newly upgraded gummy bears!
