Columbia Bhangra hosts their annual showcase, BHeights XIX.
Bhangra is a traditional folk dance originating from the region of Punjab. This past weekend, Columbia Bhangra held their annual showcase: Bhangra in the Heights XIX. The show highlighted vibrant, high-energy bhangra as well as a range of other traditional South Asian dance performances from other Columbia teams.
The performing teams included not only Columbia South Asian dance teams but visiting bhangra teams as well. Teams travelled from all over the country to perform at this showcase, including Hook Em Bhangra (from the University of Texas), the all female New England Bhangra Club, Binghamton Bhangra, and URochester Bhangra. Each team undoubtedly lit up the stage with their energetic routines.
Columbia’s Bhangra had two routines twice with their first being an all seniors ensemble to highlight the graduating members of the team, and concluding the show with a full ensemble routine. The performance was nothing short of incredible, featuring a high-intensity, high-energy routine that left everyone in the audience amazed by the host team.
The evening ended on a more sentimental note with speeches for the graduating seniors of Columbia Bhangra to conclude a night of celebrating “culture, community and the contagious spirit of bhangra.”
