Take a food tour of the Lower East Side!
Happening off campus: Yesterday, the Supreme Court found that Representative Cleo Fields’ Louisiana district had used race illegally when drawing district lines. The ruling was split six to three, with the majority arguing the decision preserved a tenet of the Voting Rights Act. The dissent claimed that the ruling would serve to undermine the law. Aiming to safeguard the ability for voters of racially marginalized identities to elect the candidates of their choosing, lawmakers have formed districts where such voters were the majority for decades under the Voting Rights Act. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Samuel A. Alito Jr. cited “vast social change” as making such safeguards unnecessary. Fields stated, “the practical effect is to make it far harder for minority communities to challenge redistricting maps that dilute their political voice.” (NYT)
Happening near campus: New York City schools are facing severe computer glitches that are rendering students incapable of completing their state exams for the second year in a row. As of the last couple of years, students are now required to take state tests on computers rather than on paper. State officials have said schools will be able to delay or pause testing before the window closes in two weeks. (Gothamist)
