Back when libraries held books, not people.

Monday night, the ESC and friends convened to discuss matters of the upmost importance. Mainly, Homecoming, and who gets to sit at what tables. Bwogger Keenan Albee reports. 

Some hurried formalities and a frenzied rundown of the week’s happenings preceded a nod to the elephant in the room at this Monday’s ESC meeting. Yep, you guessed it. The Watson fiasco took center stage  beginning with a—rather dramatic—out-loud reading of the proposed action amendment. The amendment claims, among other things, that over 60% of Watson seating went unused during the first week of finals last spring, and that Business School reps have conceded that business students tend to make use of all that fine library space earlier in the day than undergrads.

Wording remained a point of contention for University Senator Akshay Shah, who proposed a preamble making clear that business school students also contribute funds to the library’s operation. The proposal was voted down, and the original amendment was passed despite the Senator’s dissent, albeit with minor modifications for clarity. This ups the student council support count for the amendment to two—GSSC was also prepared to vote on the amendment as of Tuesday night.

In things less related to battles over study space:

• Changes to the Lerner SGO are still in the works—the final plan is to make the space more accessible to student groups by next spring. Lots of talk about tables.
• Some of the GSSC Eboard was present and is looking forward to “four-school collaboration.” Also take note that GSSC worked alongside ESC to create the Watson proposal.
• There are going to be a lot of giveaways at homecoming. Spirit Day will be on Thursday, 2-4, on the Van Am Quad. The Pep Rally will be on Friday, 5:30-6:15, on Low Steps.
