New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art, but sometimes it’s difficult to break the Morningside-bubble and experience it all first-hand. “This Week in the Arts” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/ theatrically-inclined on campus.

Sunday, April 10

• Cellist Deborah Pae Performs with Pianists Donwon Lee, Yong Murray, 4:00 PM, The Italian Academy at 1161 Amsterdam Avenue – Program will features pieces by Beethoven, Schubert, and Benjamin Britten

Wednesday, April 13

• Mid-Day Music featuring Omar Abboud, Angela Kim, and Shaheen Malick, 12:00 PM, Garden Room at the Faculty House – The piano trio will be performing as part of the Mid-Day Music recital series. Program will feature pieces by Brahms, Piazzolla, Beethoven, and Franck.
• Flowers of Freedom, 6:30 PM, Harriman Institute Atrium (420 West 118th Street, 12th Floor) – This documentary, “set in Kyrgyzstan, [is] about a group of women activists who organized after the Kumtor truck Barskoon cyanide spill in 1998.” (See trailer here.)
• A Conversation with Christian Hawkey, 7:00 PM, Room 413 in Dodge Hall – “The author of Ventrakl (inspired by the work of Georg Trakl) discusses the politics of experimental translation techniques in poetry.”

Thursday, April 14

• CUPlayers presents “Jumpers”, 7:00 PM, Glicker-Milstein Theatre in the Diana Center – “With a gymnast shot dead mid-performance, men landing on the moon and a new political party coming to power, the lives of Dotty and George Moore are thrown into a whirlwind. Jumpers explores the hilarious ways in which politics, philosophy, religion and morality clash in a house filled with philosophers, a retired stage actress, several pets and a team of Radical Liberal gymnasts.” (Tickets are $5 with CUID; additional shows on April 15th at 7:00 PM and April 16th at 7:00 PM)
• RAWCUS 360° by RAW ELEMENTZ, 8:30 PM, Roone Arledge Auditorium – RAWCUS 360° is a hip-hop dance showcase, featuring Raw Elementz, Onyx, CU Generation, Venom, Voltage, CUSH, and UnTapped. (Tickets are $5 with CUID)

Saturday, April 16th

• The Bach Society presents “The Magic Flute”, 7:00 PM – “Columbia’s biggest opera production yet: a new abridged English version of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute.'” (April 16th performance requires no ticket and is in St. Paul’s Chapel; additional performance on April 23rd in Roone Arledge Auditorium is free with reserved ticket)
