Dean Hinkson sent another email this evening (this has been a busy night) detailing the new dining options available to Barnard students. The email states that many of the changes were spurred by discussions of food insecurity on campus. Among these changes, Hewitt Dining Hall will now be open for brunch and dinner over Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, and when the residence halls reopen after Winter Break.
In addition to renewed* access to JJ’s, Barnard students (well, everyone) can now enjoy dinner and Late Nite in the Diana. Dean Hinkson also announced that Barnard has hired an Executive Chef who will be “a great resource for any questions or concerns about the menus.”
You can read about all of the changes to the Barnard dining options and meal plans in the email below:
Dear Barnard Returning Students,
Welcome back!
As we ended last year’s Spring Semester, there were a number of concerns that were raised by the student body regarding the meal plan and food insecurity. We spent a fair amount of time reviewing these concerns and hope that you will find that this announcement attempts to address those concerns.
Meal Locations:
We made some changes this year that allow our students to have an even wider array of choices in venue locations.
McIntosh Café in The Diana Center will now be available for dinner Monday-Thursday as part of your meal plan.
In addition, we are moving Late Nite meal to McIntosh Café, which we think is an exciting new location, in alignment with student activities.
John Jay, Ferris Booth continue as locations for meal swipes, as well as JJ’s.
We are also pleased to announce that we have hired an Executive Chef who will be primarily be based in Hewitt, she will be a great resource for any questions or concerns about the menus.Choosing the Right Meal Plan for You:
Based on the input from many students, we have changed the default meal plan to be Convenience Plan 3 — which is 30 meals and 150 points (for those who live outside the Quad). You, of course, have the option to choose the plan that works best for you. Please take a moment to review all the plans since we have added some new configurations. Plans and pricing are listed at http://barnard.edu/bursar/tuition-and-fees#Mealplans. For those on financial aid, please be aware that your financial aid package covers all meal plans. In addition, we want to remind you that if you choose a smaller plan at the beginning of semester, you can always add an additional plan if you run out, or purchase additional meals or points in smaller increments. Please stop by Aramark’s Hewitt Office if you have any questions.
Lastly, the Hewitt Dining Hall will be open for buffet style brunch and dinner during Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break and when students may enter the residence halls after Winter Break.
We hope that you are as excited by these changes as we are, and we look forward to seeing you on campus.
Respectfully,
Avis Hinkson

*We’re not supposed to say this because apparently it was just a fluke that Barnard students had access in the first place.
