Lucky Barnard juniors with good lottery numbers, read ahead for what your future may hold in Sulz Tower.
Location: 3009 Broadway (the Barnard Quad)
Nearby dorms: All the dorms in the Barnard Quad (Sulz-Reid, Sulz proper, Brooks, and Hewitt), along with the 600s and Columbia dorms Furnald and Schapiro if you’re feeling adventurous.
Stores and restaurants: the 116th Halal cart (along with various other food trucks, which are there usually into sunset), Morton Williams, Shake Shack, Pret a Manger.
Cost: According to an e-mail from ResLife, all Barnard rooms will cost the same, except for 110 studio singles. Prices will be available in late April. Just be wary of the upperclass quad meal plan (not applicable to seniors)!
Amenities:
- Bathrooms: The A & B suites of Sulz Tower share a stall-style bathroom, cleaned by Facilities. The A & B suites of Sulz Tower share a stall-style bathroom, cleaned by Facilities.
- AC/Heating: Much like the freshman-equivalent housing, Sulz Tower does have A/C & controlled heating.
- Lounge: Within the kitchens.
- Kitchen: 2 kitchens per floor. Pretty similar to the Sulz lounges, but with a fridge and banging views. The TV is a bit of a downgrade, but no one uses those anyway.
- Laundry: You have to use the machines on the 8th floor. Fortunately, the 8th floor has the greatest number of washing machines. Unfortunately, you’re sharing this with everyone in Sulz Tower plus the 8th floor plus everyone below them who chooses to use their laundry room.
- Computers/printers: Available in the basement and nearby in Barnard Hall.
- Gym: Not within the building itself, but pretty close in the basement of Barnard Hall.
- Intra-transportation: Two elevators that go all the way to the 17th floor.
- Hardwood/carpet: Tile.
Room variety:
- Modified corridor style
- 96 singles for seniors only (13 x 9)
- 14 pretty big doubles (16 x 13)
Numbers:
- Pretty much impossible to get into if you’re not a rising senior unless you get pulled in. Even then, pretty much reserved for the seniors with the best lottery numbers.
Bwog recommendation:
Great for upperclassmen who love convenience. The views are A1 on all sides, plus you’re too high up to hear common street noise. If you’re fond of long elevator rides and don’t mind the occasional first-year taking your elevator, it’s perfect. Plus, events are always being held on the 17th floor so you can walk up for catered food. The A/C is a huge plus because it’s basically only found in Sulz, Plimpton, CG, and Elliot. Secure the bag with a great lottery number or by being an RA pull-in.
Resident opinions:
- “There’s leaking on some floors.”
- “The heater is there but control is limited.”
- “Room sizes are variable so you may get stuck with a small room, but if you get a view facing the Hudson, it’s amazing and totally worth it.
- “The walls are thick, but if it’s a room close to the elevators and bathroom the noise can be annoying.
- “I really like being close to everything on campus so it’s extremely convenient.”
- “I absolutely love living in Sulz Tower. The singles might be smaller than in other locations but it’s easily compensated by the central location. I would say that most of the tension between suitemates can be boiled down to splitting chore responsibilities (esp. cleaning the floors and bathrooms), but maintenance does that for us so that’s one less thing to worry about! As a musician, it’s so convenient to have practice rooms right in the building as well, and they’re in much better condition than the ones in Schapiro.”

@FYI P.S. Cathedral Gardens also has AC (not just Plimpton, Elliott, Sulz Tower, & Sulzberger)
@FYI Seniors living in the tower don’t have to enroll in the upperclassmen quad meal plan. Only upperclassmen living in Hewitt, Reid, Brooks or Sulz floors 2-8 have to enroll.
