Happening in the World: Claudia Lopez Hernandez was just elected as Colombia’s first female and lesbian mayor, filling the position as mayor of Bogota, which is considered to be the second most powerful office in the country. She is also the first lesbian mayor of a capital city in all of Latin America, and her platform has focused on anti-corruption, fighting child labor, advancements in minority rights, and more. (CBS)

Happening in the US: Indiana restaurant, Rusted Silo Southern BBQ & Brew House, is offering a reward of free barbecue for life in exchange for information on a break-in the restaurant suffered on October 18th. They are also offering discounts to those who spread the word on social media, which hasn’t caught the robber yet but has drawn in lots of customers. (CNN)

Happening in New York: Today, Housing Works employees are planning a walkout in response to the non-profit’s discouragement of its employees forming a union. Workers say this policy goes against the company’s social justice roots and cite overwork, among other things, as reasons for unionization; meanwhile, chief executive officer Charles King says he isn’t opposed to a union in principle, but he doubts a union is the right choice for solving issues. Happening on Campus: Tonight, Jameel Jaffer of the Knight First Amendment Institute and Amy Davidson Sorkin of The New Yorker will converse via video feed with Edward Snowden about secrecy, surveillance, security, and the role of whistleblowers. This event will be hosted at The Forum from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.
