Happening in the World: Saudi Arabia hosted its first women’s wrestling match on Thursday. The match is one in a series of recent changes as the country attempts to shake its oppressive reputation. Since August of this year, the Saudi Arabian government has allowed women to apply for a passport and travel alone without a man’s permission. Women in the country were granted the right to drive in 2018. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Thousands of Chicago Public School teachers—and hundreds of thousands of students—are returning to school after an eleven-day teachers strike. To reach a deal, the city agreed to allocate $35 million towards reducing class sizes and hiring hundreds of additional staff members by 2023. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: On Wednesday, the New York City Council passed a bill banning the sale of foie gras in the city. The production of the delicacy—in which ducks are force-fed a liver-fattening corn mixture for 20 days, often leaving them too big to walk or breathe normally—has long been known as one of the most inhumane processes in the meat industry. The legislation is a major success for animal rights activists, but is expected to hurt the foie gras industry. “It’s going to make it difficult to stay afloat,” said one foie gras farmer. Luckily, that’s the point of the bill.
Happening on Campus: Dr. Sunil Agarwal, professor of Mechanical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, will be speaking today at an event called Robotics to Characterize, Retrain, and Restore Human Movements. Stop by NoCo Room 1406 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm to hear him talk about how robotics can be used to help people with limited mobility.
