Morning, folks!

Happening in the World: President Gotabaya Rajapaks of Sri Lanka recently pardoned former army officer Sunil Ratnayake. Ratnayake had been sentenced to death in 2015 for slitting the throats of eight members of the Tamil ethnic group, native to Sri Lanka. Ratnayake’s sentence had been held up by Amnesty International and other human rights groups as a rare instance of accountability for reprehensible, government-backed actions taking place during that country’s civil war—fought against a Tamil separatist group. Happening in the U.S.: NASA has contracted the space transportation services company SpaceX to deliver supplies to the Gateway, a planned space station that will orbit the Moon. The Gateway will advance NASA’s completion of the Artemis program, a long-term project to land people on the aqueous poles of the moon by 2024. Though SpaceX is working on new vehicles to ferry greater capacities of goods to the Gateway, NASA has specified that it may contract more companies to assist with Artemis. (The Verge)

Happening in NYC: Mayor Bill de Blasio has assailed local internet service providers such as Optimum and Spectrum for failing to extend their offer of 60-day free internet service to subscribers with unpaid bills. The restrictions, many argue, make it virtually impossible for students living in poverty-stricken households to keep up with classes. After further media inquiry, Optimum has dropped the policy; Spectrum—as of this writing—has not followed suit. (The City)
