Happening in the World: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been reelected for a sixth term amidst accusations of election fraud. Bobi Wine, the opposing candidate, is contesting the results as a government order shut down the internet in the country for days, including during the election. Wine also reported a threatening police presence at polling locations and his own home during the election (CNN).
Happening in the US: NASA is running a final ground test of their megarocket today in preparation for its maiden flight later this year. The test, which will take about eight minutes and occur between 5 and 7 p.m., simulates the rocket’s climb to orbit. The engines are built to create 1.6 million pounds of thrust, meaning if successful, this will be the most powerful rocket to fly to space, one that intends on bringing Americans back to the moon (BBC).
Happening in NYC: An articulated MTA bus crashed while making a turn onto the George Washington Bridge Thursday, causing half of the bus to fall down to the expressway below. The MTA’s investigation has found that the bus driver was most likely speeding. The Interim Transit President, Sarah Feinberg, also highlighted the bus driver’s refusal to take a hospital drug and alcohol test after the crash (Gothamist).
